There’s something intoxicating about waking up in Nassau. Maybe it’s the silky breeze that carries the scent of salt and bougainvillea, or the way the morning sun glints off turquoise water like scattered gems. Whatever it is, the Bahamian capital always manages to coax out my inner island goddess.

Over the years I’ve sampled lazy beach days, adrenaline‑pumping speedboat rides and everything in between, and the magic never fades. In this guide I’ll share my favorite Nassau excursions — from frolicking with dolphins and piggies to wandering historic limestone steps.

Each adventure includes sensory details, insider tips and links so you can book with confidence. Grab your sun hat, because paradise awaits!

What Makes Nassau Special?

Nassau sits on New Providence Island, a short hop from Florida yet worlds away in ambiance. The city blends British colonial heritage with Afro‑Caribbean rhythms, pastel‑painted buildings and crystal‑clear seas.

Its location as a cruise‑ship hub makes it easy to visit multiple islands in a single trip; at the same time, independent travelers will find beaches, national parks, art and gastronomy to occupy weeks.

The excursions below are curated to showcase Nassau’s diverse offerings. Each entry reads like a little travel diary — expect personal musings, helpful packing notes and subtle splashes of style reminiscent of Vogue’s travel pages.

Best Nassau Excursions in the Bahamas

1. Blue Lagoon Island

There are beaches — and then there’s Blue Lagoon Island, a family‑owned oasis about three miles from Nassau. From the moment the boat pulls into the hidden lagoon and palm trees rustle overhead, it feels like a secret revealed.

The island’s history runs deep: the site was once a pirate haunt and later a salt‑extraction settlement, but today it’s a lush playground with white sand, aquamarine water and an inflatable aqua park for all ages. In the calm lagoon you can float with complimentary inner tubes, rent a kayak or simply sway in a hammock under a swaying palm.

For marine‑life lovers, there’s a professionally run marine park where dolphins, sea lions and even nurse sharks live. I’ll never forget the thrill of seeing a dolphin leap just a few feet away during a swim program. After you’ve worked up an appetite, a buffet lunch of Bahamian and international dishes is included.

Practicalities – Blue Lagoon is ideal for families and couples. Included in the excursion are the round‑trip ferry from Nassau, beach access, lunch, lounge chairs, water‑park admission and floats. Pack a swimsuit, towel, rashguard, cash or card for extras and comfortable water shoes.

There’s no age restriction, but bookings via cruise lines may have different inclusions; always check the details. To interact with dolphins or sea lions, book a separate encounter through the island’s reservation desk.

Book it: Blue Lagoon Island Beach Day on Viator includes ferry transportation and lunch.

2. Atlantis Paradise Island

Atlantis is synonymous with fantasy: towering slides, aquariums teeming with rays and sharks, high‑design hotels, restaurants by celebrity chefs and the Caribbean’s largest casino. The star attraction for day visitors is Aquaventure, a 141‑acre water park with 20 million gallons of fun.

Here thrill‑seekers can zoom down the near‑vertical Leap of Faith slide — a 60‑foot drop through a transparent tunnel submerged in a shark lagoon — or race friends on dual Challenger slides. For a more relaxed experience, drift down the mile‑long Rapids River, where surging waves and drops up to seven feet propel you through lush landscaping.

What sets Atlantis apart, though, is its marine world. At the Marine Habitat, more than 50,000 aquatic animals representing over 250 species live in 14 open‑air lagoons with eight million gallons of ocean water. Walking through the tunnels of “The Dig,” an Atlantis‑themed aquarium reminiscent of a lost city, I was mesmerized by moray eels weaving through coral and the hypnotic glide of manta rays overhead.

Outside the aquariums, Atlantis’ miles of sugar‑white beaches invite sunbathing, while pools range from kids’ splash zones to posh adults‑only oases. If you’re staying overnight, park access is included; day passes are available for cruise passengers and independent travelers.

Practicalities – Atlantis is a sprawling resort, so wear comfortable walking sandals. For Aquaventure day passes, bring your own towel or rent on site. Most slides have a 48‑inch height minimum. Don’t forget reef‑safe sunscreen — the sun can be fierce in the Bahamas.

Book it: Viator offers Atlantis Aquaventure day passes. Alternatively, GetYourGuide lists Atlantis day activities.

3. Pearl Island

If Atlantis is an adrenaline rush, Pearl Island is the epitome of barefoot chic. Accessible via a 20‑minute ferry from Paradise Island, this privately owned cay invites you to live out your castaway fantasies. The island features two pristine beaches, an iconic lighthouse and winding paths through hibiscus and sea grapes.

Here I love to stroll to the lighthouse for panoramic views before settling into a hammock with a fruity Bahamian cocktail. Guided snorkeling tours reveal reefs teeming with parrotfish and coral fans, and the calm water is perfect for kayaking or stand‑up paddleboarding.

A freshly prepared lunch of grilled chicken, fish fingers, peas ’n’ rice and coleslaw is included in every beach‑escape package.

Pearl Island operates cashless, so pack a credit card, swimwear, towel and lots of sunscreen. Lockers are available for a small fee, and there are freshwater showers and full bathroom facilities. What I appreciate most is the relaxed vibe; there’s no race to grab chairs because there’s plenty of space for everyone. If you want a little extra comfort, rent a private cabana with waiter service.

Book it: Pearl Island Beach Escape on GetYourGuide or Viator includes ferry transfer, lunch and non‑motorized water sports.

4. Exuma Cays (Swimming Pigs Tour)

Of all the excursions I’ve done in the Bahamas, the Exuma swimming pigs tour remains the most surreal. You board a sleek powerboat at the Paradise Island ferry terminal and zoom across indigo water toward the Exuma archipelago.

The first stop is Allen’s Cay, home to endangered Bahamian rock iguanas; feeding them is like stepping into a Jurassic postcard. Next, your captain weaves through the cays past sandbars and celebrity hideaways, then slows at a turquoise lagoon where the sunken wreckage of one of Pablo Escobar’s planes lies visible beneath the surface. At Compass Cay Marina, you can swim alongside gentle nurse sharks or simply dangle your feet from the dock as they glide by.

The main event is Big Major Cay, better known as Pig Beach. When the boat approaches, dozens of piglets and hefty hogs paddle out from the shore, snouts twitching for snacks. Jump in and you can swim and feed them while your guide snaps photos.

After a lunch stop at a local restaurant, the final treat is lounging on a sandbar or deserted beach where the water shimmers like liquid glass. This excursion includes food to feed the pigs, iguanas and sharks, plus bottled water, beer and lunch.

Practicalities – Tours run full day with early morning departures. Bring ID, sunblock, a towel and a light windbreaker for the boat ride. Due to high‑speed travel, pregnant travelers, toddlers under two and those with serious back or heart problems cannot join. If the boat ride seems too long, consider the shorter Rose Island pig experience (see below).

Book it: Viator and GetYourGuide offer Exuma powerboat tours with swimming pigs departing from Nassau.

5. Cable Beach

After days of island hopping, sometimes you crave nothing more than a languid afternoon on Nassau’s most famous stretch of sand. Cable Beach is my go‑to for a relaxed beach day. Stretching about 2.5 miles along New Providence’s north coast, it’s known for easy access, calm seas, turquoise water and soft sands. Because the shoreline is so long, you can choose between lively spots near the resorts or quiet pockets where the only soundtrack is the rhythmic hush of waves.

I love renting a beach chair or laying out my sarong under swaying palms and watching the planes glide into the nearby airport. Resorts line the shore, making it easy to grab cocktails or conch fritters without wandering far. Families appreciate that the water is shallow and safe for small children and novice snorkelers.

Cable Beach is also a gateway to water sports. You can rent jet skis, try windsurfing, paddle a kayak or join a snorkeling trip to see green sea turtles near shore. Many resorts provide free equipment for their guests while independent vendors rent by the hour.

If you’re staying at Sandals Royal Bahamian, a ferry departs every fifteen minutes to the resort’s private offshore island where two secluded beaches, a swim‑up bar, seafood restaurant, over‑water hammocks and a zen garden await — it’s an indulgence I highly recommend for couples.

Cable Beach is fun to visit year‑round; peak season runs from mid‑December through April, but the best beach weather arrives March through June when daytime temperatures average 82–86 °F (28–30 °C).

Practicalities – Pack sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a reusable water bottle. Vendors sell snacks and local beers; cash comes in handy. The beach is free to access, but some resorts charge for chair rentals.

Book it: If you prefer a guaranteed lounger and buffet, day passes to resorts like Breezes or Baha Mar can be booked via Resort for a Day or Viator.

6. Rose Island (Snorkeling & Swimming Pigs)

Closer and more intimate than the Exumas, Rose Island offers a whimsical day of snorkelling, hammock lounging and piggy play. The day begins with a 25‑minute catamaran ride from Paradise Island to 11 acres of private paradise exclusive to Sandy Toes guests.

Upon arrival, you’re greeted by the resident pigs — Babe, Wilbur, Pumba and their friends — who roam freely and swim alongside visitors. Unlike some rushed tours where you have only a few minutes with the animals, Sandy Toes lets you interact with them throughout the day. When you need a break from piggy cuddles, head to the guided snorkeling area to explore colorful reefs or float in the calm lagoon.

What I adore about Sandy Toes is the laid‑back “do nothing, experience everything” mentality. Your beach day includes an open bar and Bahamian buffet lunch, access to hammocks and a shaded garden, and plenty of time to nap in a hammock or sip cocktails at the beach bar.

You’ll also meet royal peacocks and friendly lizards, adding a touch of whimsy. Because the island is solar powered and committed to animal welfare, it feels like a feel‑good indulgence.

Practicalities – Bring swimwear, a towel, reef‑safe sunscreen and some cash or card. The island is cashless for purchases but tips are appreciated. Trips run six hours, and participants must sign a waiver.

Book it: Sandy Toes Rose Island and Swimming Pigs Tour offers packages with open bar, lunch and round‑trip transportation.

7. Clifton Heritage National Park

History and nature collide at Clifton Heritage National Park, located on the western tip of New Providence Island. This protected area invites visitors to stroll shaded trails past ruins of 18th‑century plantations and Lucayan cultural sites.

While exploring, I felt the weight of history: enslaved Africans once toiled here, and interpretive signage tells their stories with reverence. On the coast, powder‑soft beaches beckon for a swim, but the real highlight lies just offshore.

Snorkelers can explore the world’s largest underwater sculpture, Ocean Atlas, an 18‑foot‑tall, 60‑ton statue by artist Jason deCaires Taylor. It stands alongside sculptures like Lucayan Faces and Virtuoso Man in the BREEF Sir Nicholas Nuttall Coral Reef Sculpture Garden.

The snorkel tour immerses you in this otherworldly gallery: drift over natural coral reefs bustling with tropical fish, glide past man‑made reef balls, and even see props from films like Thunderball (1965), Never Say Never Again (1983) and Jaws the Revenge (1987) resting on the seabed.

Tours include equipment, lunch, round‑trip transportation and certified guides. The guided option is beginner‑friendly, but you should be comfortable in the water; self‑guided snorkelers must bring their own gear. On land, enjoy the tranquil beaches and keep an eye out for wildlife such as iguanas and seabirds.

Book it: Reserve a snorkel tour via Clifton Heritage Authority or Viator.

Practicalities – Bring swimwear, a towel, reef‑safe sunscreen and water shoes. Tours last 2–3 hours and are suitable for ages 12 and up. If you’re more interested in history than snorkeling, the heritage tour focuses on plantation ruins and Lucayan heritage.

8. Queen’s Staircase

Tucked in a leafy grotto just off Nassau’s bustling Bay Street, the Queen’s Staircase is a living monument to Bahamian history. The 31‑metre‑high limestone staircase was chiseled by enslaved African laborers between 1793 and 1794 to create a direct route between Fort Fincastle and the city.

At the time, British colonialists feared an invasion and constructed several forts; the staircase allowed soldiers to quickly access the fortifications. Originally 66 steps, only 64 are visible today because a roadway buried the bottom two. In the 19th century the staircase was renamed to honor Queen Victoria, whose reign saw the abolition of slavery in the British Empire.

Walking up the shaded steps, flanked by moss‑covered walls and cascading waterfalls, I felt like I’d entered a natural cathedral. Tree roots snake through the limestone, and if you go early in the morning you’ll likely have it to yourself. Though it’s a quick stop, the Queen’s Staircase is free and offers a tranquil respite from downtown’s bustle.

Pair it with a visit to nearby Fort Fincastle for sweeping views of Nassau Harbor. Practicalities – Wear sturdy sandals; the steps can be slippery after rain. Bring water and your camera for dramatic shots. The site is temporarily closed due to restoration of the adjacent water tower, so check local advisories before visiting.

9. Nassau Straw Market

A trip to Nassau isn’t complete without embracing the art of bargaining at the Nassau Straw Market. Located downtown on Bay Street, this bustling marketplace is famous for hand‑woven Bahamian crafts. Rows of stalls overflow with straw hats, tote bags, mats, dolls, conch shell jewelry and intricate wood carvings.

The tradition dates back to the early 1940s when local women braided straw to create practical baskets for carrying fruit and fish; as tourism boomed after World War II, visitors began buying these works as souvenirs.

Today, the market is still the heart of this cottage industry. Vendors are usually happy to haggle, and you’ll find everything from hand‑stitched Junkanoo dolls to spiny lobster carvings.

I recommend arriving early to beat the crowds and wandering the aisles with an open mind — sometimes the quirkiest items make the best mementos. Nearby, Pompey Market in Cable Beach offers a smaller, more relaxed shopping experience. Bring cash (U.S. dollars are accepted), though many vendors now accept cards.

The straw market operates daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. according to season. Practicalities – Keep belongings close and practice respectful bargaining; vendors rely on sales for their livelihood. If you’re not into souvenirs, the market is still a great place to chat with locals and soak up Bahamian culture.

10. Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre

One of Nassau’s sweetest surprises lies in the heart of the city: Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre. Spread across more than four acres of tropical gardens, this boutique zoo doubles as a conservation hub. The gardens were created in 1937 by Jamaican horticulturist Hedley Edwards, who named them “Ardastra” from the Latin ardua ad astra (“striving toward the stars”).

In the 1950s he introduced endangered Caribbean flamingos from the island of Inagua, sparking a successful breeding program that rescued the national bird from near extinction. Today, the famous “marching flamingos” perform daily shows where a handler coaxes them into synchronized parades — a delight for kids and adults alike. Watching their pink feathers shimmer against the green foliage feels like stepping into a vintage postcard.

Beyond flamingos, Ardastra hosts over 135 animals, from African servals to Bahamian hutias and rescue parrots. Visitors can hand‑feed rainbow‑colored lory parrots at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., then marvel as flamingos parade at 10:30 a.m., 2:15 p.m. and 4 p.m. daily.

The gardens themselves are a botanical wonderland with coconut palms, orchids, bougainvillea and hibiscus blooming year‑round. I love wandering the winding trails, where mango and breadfruit trees create cool canopies and vine‑draped paths reveal hidden corners. The centre also runs education programs and animal encounters such as tortoise feedings and rabbit petting.

Practicalities – Ardastra is open daily except Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Wear comfortable shoes and bring insect repellent. Most exhibits are outdoors, so pack a hat and water. Admission supports wildlife care and conservation; additional fees apply for special animal encounters.

Book it: Tickets can be purchased directly at Ardastra.com or through Viator.

Nassau’s allure goes far beyond its postcard‑perfect beaches. It’s a place where you can plunge down a shark‑filled slide one day and meditate in a historic limestone stairwell the next. Where piggies paddle up for snacks, flamingos march like ballerinas and underwater sculptures become coral‑encrusted art galleries.

We hope this guide helps you craft an itinerary that suits your travel style, whether you crave luxury, history, wildlife or pure relaxation. No matter how you explore, you’ll find that the Bahamian capital has a way of leaving sand between your toes and sunshine in your soul.
