The pronunciation is a bit difficult, consider that it is a language really rich in guttural sounds. My advice is to always ask local people who will advise you best.

However, you are not a perfect traveller if you do not know some typical Hungarian phrase, motto or saying. It is important to know these phrases because they always remember and recall the culture of a place.

Typically Hungarian Mottos and Proverbs

  • Egyik tizenkilenc, másik egy híján húsz. – “One is nineteen, the other is one less than twenty.
  • Sokat akar a szarka, de nem bírja a farka. – “The magpie wants a lot, but its tail can’t carry it all.”
  • Sok beszéd szegénység. – “Too much talk is poverty.”
  • Ritka, mint a fehér holló. – “As rare as the white raven.”
  • A türelem rózsát teremt. – “Patience creates roses.”
  • Ki korán kel aranyat lel. – “The one who gets up early will find gold.”

When you have the Hungarian proverbs at your disposal, you cannot miss the opportunity to read them over and over again to understand their deepest secrets, to appreciate their wisdom: in fact, they know how to teach and give more than precious teachings, inspired by common sense and ideal for application in everyday life.

In short, thanks to the Hungarian proverbs, you can count on a small but vast heritage of culture, but also of ethical and spiritual values, which can make available a sort of enlightened education, based on prudence and reflection.
