Lisbon is a such a beautiful city with even more beautiful places to chill and enjoy the city’s beautiful attractions. Having explored Lisbon’s old town, checked out Alfama, Belem, the many miradouro viewpoints in Lisbon, we set out sights on watching the sunset at MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology. Presenting itself as a new cultural centre in the city of Lisbon, the MAAT represents an ambition to host national and international exhibitions with contributions by contemporary artists, architects, and thinkers.
The MAAT also represents the city’s intent to help revitalize the riverfront of Belém’s historic district. You guys I am sure by now know my love for Architecture with some of my coverage of night time photography of Tower Bridge, Dusseldorf’s Frank Gehry Buildings so I was not going pass up on checking out MAAT, which was designed by British architecture firm Amanda Levete Architects. The MAAT building rises on the riverfront with an architectural narrative that is sensitive to the city’s cultural heritage offering, among other features, a pedestrian roof that offers a privileged view of Lisbon and the Tagus, and which has b became an iconic location.

The Museum
From the roof of MAAT, you have an amazing view of the city and attractions across the river like The Sanctuary of Christ the King, a Catholic monument and shrine dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus Christ overlooking the city of Lisbon situated in Almada. It was inspired by the Christ the Redeemer statue of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil, after the Cardinal Patriarch of Lisbon visited that monument.
The museum has 2 parts, one a brick structure, the former Tejo Power Station, now turned science museum. Another is a beautiful modern structure covered with ceramic tiles and with a cantilevered rooftop terrace where you can walk up with great views of Belem. The building alone is worth a visit and has to be seen when in the city. The museum is also definitely a must when you visit Lisbon. It’s free on the first Sunday of the month. The technology exhibitions in the red brick factory build is the red building next to the modern building. You also have self-experiments in the science section that would be perfect if visiting with kids.
Sunset Views
MAAT is in a superb area of Lisbon and a full day can be spent here. Day or night, you can enjoy beautiful views from the riverfront promenade or up on the rooftop terrace. When the sun lowers the tiles on MAAT taken on the sunshine reflections and the displays of light and shadows around the building is just magical. The views from the top are even better in the evening, as is a walk towards the Ponte 25 de Abril (The bridge).
