Ultimate World Cup 2026 Guide to New York (Where to Stay, Eat And What to Do)

Last updated: May 28, 2026 by Judy Ann

Planning a World Cup 2026 trip to New York? This ultimate NYC World Cup guide covers where to stay, best hotels near MetLife Stadium, where to eat, match day tips, fan zones, things to do in Manhattan, Brooklyn & beyond, plus travel tips for FIFA World Cup USA 2026. Perfect for first-time visitors, football fans, NYC itineraries, New York travel inspiration, stadium guides, and World Cup travel planning.

If there’s one place I’d tell you to experience the FIFA World Cup 2026, it’s New York City. Not just because matches are happening nearby, but because this city will feel like the heartbeat of the entire tournament.

From iconic skyline views and rooftop cocktails to late-night pizza slices and once-in-a-lifetime stadium moments, New York delivers a World Cup experience that’s equal parts football and culture. And with the final set to take place at MetLife Stadium, this is arguably the most exciting host city of them all.

I’ve put together this full guide to help you plan your trip—from where to stay (this matters a lot), where to eat between matches, and what to do when you’re not glued to a screen or inside the stadium.

Perfect for first-time visitors, football fans, NYC itineraries, New York travel inspiration, stadium guides, and World Cup travel planning.

Why New York is the Place for World Cup 2026

New York isn’t technically a stadium city—matches are played just across the river in New Jersey—but trust me, you’ll want to base yourself here.

Here’s why:

  • The final match will be hosted at MetLife Stadium
  • Over 1.2 million visitors are expected in the region during the tournament
  • The city will have free fan zones across all five boroughs (huge win if you don’t have tickets)
  • Endless restaurants, nightlife, and sightseeing between matches

And honestly? Even if you don’t attend a single game, the energy alone would make the trip worth it.

Where to Stay for the World Cup in New York

Choosing where to stay is the most important decision you’ll make for this trip.

Here’s a simple breakdown:

  • Manhattan (Midtown / near Penn Station) → Best for first-time visitors + easy stadium access
  • Times Square → High energy, walkable, close to everything
  • New Jersey (near stadium) → Best for proximity but less “NYC experience”

My advice: Stay in Manhattan near Penn Station so you can hop on the direct train to the stadium on match days.

Best hotels for World Cup 2026

Chic & Boutique Stay (My Top Pick)

  • MADE Hotel
A stylish, design-forward boutique hotel that feels very “New York.” It’s within walking distance to Penn Station, making match-day travel super easy.

Perfect if you want aesthetics + convenience.

Trendy & Social Vibe

  • Moxy NYC Times Square
This is where I’d stay if I wanted a fun, social atmosphere. It’s steps from everything and just a short walk to trains heading to the stadium.

Think rooftop bars, young crowd, great location.

Classic NYC Experience

  • Hotel Edison
Right in Times Square with that old-school New York charm—and still well connected for stadium travel.

Great for first-time visitors.

Easy Transit Access

  • Millennium Broadway Times Square
A super-practical option near Port Authority with direct transport routes to the stadium.

Ideal if you want stress-free logistics.

Stay Near the Stadium (New Jersey Option)

If you want to be really close to the action:

  • Homewood Suites by Hilton East Rutherford – Meadowlands
  • Fairfield Inn by Marriott East Rutherford Meadowlands

These are within a couple of miles of the stadium, but you’ll sacrifice that iconic NYC vibe.

Important tip: Book your hotel at least 6–12 months in advance. Demand is already surging and prices are rising fast.

Where to Eat in New York During the World Cup

New York’s food scene is overwhelming—in the best way. You could eat something completely different every day and still not scratch the surface.

Here’s how I’d approach it:

Breakfast & Brunch Spots

  • Jack’s Wife Freda → Cute, trendy, always a line (worth it)
  • Bubby’s → Pancakes you’ll still think about months later
  • Russ & Daughters Cafe → Classic NYC bagel + lox moment

Casual Must-Eats

  • Joe’s Pizza → The quintessential NYC slice
  • Shake Shack → Fast, iconic, always reliable
  • Katz’s Delicatessen → Legendary pastrami sandwiches

Dinner & Drinks

  • Catch NYC → Trendy rooftop vibes
  • Carbone → If you can get a reservation, do it
  • RH Rooftop Restaurant → Chic, aesthetic, perfect for content

My tip: Book restaurants early—especially during match days. The city will be packed.

How to Get to the Stadium (Very Important)

The stadium isn’t in Manhattan—it’s about 5–10 miles away in New Jersey.

Here’s the easiest way:

Train (Best Option)

  • Go to Penn Station
  • Take the NJ Transit Meadowlands Line
  • Direct service runs on match days

Travel time: ~25–40 minutes

Heads up: Transport prices may spike significantly during the tournament, so plan ahead.

Best Things to Do in NYC During the World Cup

Even if you’re there for the football, you have to explore.

 Classic NYC Experiences

  • Statue of Liberty
  • Central Park
  • Empire State Building

These are obvious—but still 100% worth it.

Culture & Entertainment

  • Broadway Theatre District
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Shopping & Neighbourhoods

  • SoHo → Boutiques + aesthetic streets
  • Williamsburg → Trendy cafés + vintage shopping

World Cup Fan Zones (Must Do)

NYC will host free fan zones across all boroughs, which is amazing if you don’t have match tickets.

Expect:

  • Giant screens
  • Food vendors
  • Live atmosphere

Honestly, this is where some of the best memories happen.

Best Tours & Experiences (Skip-the-Line Worth It)

If you want to make the most of your trip, I’d book at least one or two experiences in advance:

  • Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island guided tours
  • NYC helicopter tour (yes, expensive—but unforgettable)
  • Brooklyn Food Tours
  • Sunset cruise around Manhattan
