Copenhagen Travel Guide – Places To Visit & Things To Do In Copenhagen

Last updated: March 16, 2026 by Bianca

Heading to Denmark and looking for the best top things to do in Denmark? From sampling food in the city to explore sights like Nyhavn, Tivoli Gardens, Frederik’s Church, Copenhagen Opera House, the Little Mermaid and more including tips on where to stay.

If you are a lover of history, architecture or even shopping then you will love Copenhagen. Originally a Viking fishing village, it only became the capital of Denmark in the 15th Century. Rich with amazing buildings that are hundreds of years old and still in pristine condition.

A photographers paradise, as there are endless possibilities, especially when the weather is playing ball. Exploring the city couldn’t be easier as the metro is easy to navigate with a choice of 12 hour/24 hour and 3 day tickets available. Bear in mind this is a cyclists heaven too so you can rent a bike and blend in with the locals, not to mention you can easily walk around to most of the attractions too.

QUICK GUIDE TO COPENHAGEN

SEE

Head to Nyhavn and take a boat tour on the canals and learn about the city’s history. Then check surrounding areas. Make stops at The Marble Church, Ameliaborg Palace, Black Diamond, Christianshavn,  climb the stairs up Our Saviour’s Church and take in the views of Copenhagen from this baroque church in the Christianhavn area.

Make sure to pay a visit to the most famous of attractions in the city; of course the little mermaid. Also, note that a lot of places are free too. Botanical gardens, The Marble Church, Black Diamond and many others all have FREE entry too which work towards minimizing your expenses.

EAT

Culinary experiences don’t get any cooler than Marchal at Angeleterre with a Nordic-French twist. Also, check out Nyhavn which is lined with bars and restaurants to appeal to any appetite. If you want something different with a little quirky touch then check out Mormors cafe a few meters from the Marble Church.

SLEEP

Stay at Hotel Angeleterre which sits right in the heart of Copenhagen and adjacent to Nyhavn. For something more budget-friendly you have the option of renting an Airbnb apartment like we did with more options for cheaper hotel and hostels dotted around the city. For more on hotels see recommendations below:

♦♦♦
For favourable / luxury budgets –  check out Hotel Angleterre, Radisson Collection (next to Tivoli Gardens), Marriott Hotel in the Latin Quarter.

♦♦♦

Mid-range priced hotels – Grand Hotel, Richmond Hotel, Mecur Hotel and Hotel Nora.

♦♦♦

Hostels and budget hotels – check out Danhostel in the city,  Copenhagen Downtown Hostel,  Generator Copenhagen and Cabinn City (budget hotels).

♦♦♦

For Apartments in Copenhagen – check out Direct Inner City, Factory/Loft Conversion, Nyhavn apartment.

SHOP

Head over to Stroget. This is Europe’s longest pedestrian street with a mammoth of shops, from budget to luxury designer shops. You will find the likes of Prada, LV, Gucci all mixed in with H&M, Vero, Zara, Other Stories and many Danish brands. Of course mixed in with cafes for much-needed breaks in between swiping plastic.

Take A Tour of Copenhagen

Copenhagen has a few free tours but these mostly depend on how many people turn up as we found out. There also many paid tours available from food tours, to walking and bicycle tours around the city.

Getting Around Copenhagen

The city is not that big, we used a few modes of transportation but mostly you can get around Copenhagen by walking. We also used the bus/tram a couple of times to get to and from our Airbnb. The only time we used the train was to get to and from the airport.

All really reliable and easy to use. You can either get 24-hour, 48-hour tickets and 7-day tickets too depending on how long your stay is. Depending which hotel you stay at in Copenhagen, they can also help you reserve a bike to rent. To see how expensive Copenhagen is, check out Yokomeshi’s post.

Weekend in Copenhagen | What to Pack

A versatile top that can easily go from casual day to evening glam with a  touch of accessories. A pair of dark jeans which can be paired with converse or heels with little effort.

Plus the weather is quite similar to London so expect a few wet patches on your visit hence why the pictures below are half filled with sunshine one minute and clouds the next so a scarf or even an umbrella wouldn’t be amiss in your packing.
